Excellence in all that we do.
This even includes keeping all tools, equipment and company vehicles immaculate too!
Based in Ponteland,Nothumberland Marshalls Tree Surgeons are an established business providing quality tree care to a range of customers from residential customers to local councils and large corporate businesses.
At Marshalls we take a real pride in our work and this is recognised by our many customers who continue to use our services regularly and come to depend on the quality of our work which conforms to the good aboricultural and safe working practises outlined in BS3998.
All staff at Marshalls are fully certificated arborists who will always strive to give you the best advice from recommending the best care for your trees to dealing with local councils concerning TPOs and work in conservation areas and filling out the relevant forms when necessary.
Wherever possible, we aim to protect and preserve trees, however there are times when trees have to come down either to make way for construction projects or because they have become hazardous through storm damage, accidental trauma, structural weakness or disease.
Trees which are known to be dead, dying or damaged present a significant risk to the public, especially in urban areas and extreme care must be taken to dismantle or fell them safely. This is skilled work requiring specialist equipment, stringent health and safety procedures and a thorough knowledge of arboriculture.
Our team of highly-trained professionals and has decades of experience in the tree care industry.
Please note: Many trees are protected in the UK so before we remove any tree, checks must be made to ensure it is not covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or situated within a Conservation Area.
Sectional dismantling
When a tree has to come down in a confined space, felling is not an option, so we undertake sectional dismantling instead, bringing the tree down a piece at a time.
This is highly skilled work where experience and knowledge are needed and since each tree and its circumstances are unique, Marshalls Tree Surgeons will discuss the project, identify any particular hazards, then decide the most appropriate technique and equipment to use.
An arborist will usually climb to the top of the tree to anchor his main climbing rope, then come down to the lowest branch to begin cutting but if the tree is dead or dangerously unstable we use a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) to access the tree.
Ropes are used to lower branches to the ground, where they are cut up into manageable sections and taken away to produce logs. Stringent health and safety procedures are adhered to throughout the process.
Felling
Felling is only possible where there is sufficient space around the tree to bring it down safely in one piece. We have the knowledge, experience and specialist equipment to fell and remove even the largest trees.
All material is removed and forwarded as timber or recycled as logs or wood chippings. Stump removal services are also offered if required.
Pruning is the most common aspect of tree maintenance. This is done to maintain the trees structural integrity and aesthetics
Reasons for Pruning
Trees are usually pruned to remove dead or diseased branches, to improve form and to reduce risk.
Trees may also be pruned to increase light and air penetration to the inside of the trees crown or to the surrounding area.
When to Prune
Most routine pruning can be carried out at any time of year with little effect to the tree.
Pruning Techniques
Cleaning and Thinning
Removal of dead or diseased or low vigour branches from the tree crown.
Thinning is selective removal of branches to improve structure and increase light and air penetration through the crown.
Reduction reduces the size of a tree where it has outgrown its location. This is best accomplished by prunning back the leaders and branch terminals to secondary branches that are large enough to assume that role, (at least one third the diameter of the cut stem).
Compared to Topping, (which is probably the worst thing you can do to a tree), reduction helps maintain form and structural integrity.
Hedge Trimming Services
When it comes to beautifully manicured landscaping, you want experts who not only will complete the job with skill and pride, but a company that’s been around for years.
Experience along with a keen aesthetic eye for landscape beauty are two factors which really matter and something Marshalls is all about. We have have been perfecting properties for years now and have the testimonials to prove our expertise.
Hedges are certainly an appealing boundary for your property’s home or business, and provide elegant structure to a garden and other outdoor areas. Hedges may be easy to grow, but when it comes time to care for them and maintain a healthy presence, the hedge trimming service you choose makes a difference.
Hiring Marshalls Tree Surgeons is a smart idea, because we are well-versed in the many hedge varieties available and the unique trimming requirements each species might have.
For instance, adult hedges or those that are established, need professional trimming to keep them dense and compact. Formal hedges with small, close leaves require more frequent trimming than informal hedges.
We offer a hedge trimming service that can deliver that precise cut that people always admire. Marshalls have an experienced team and the right tools to create a gorgeous shape to your hedges. We can tackle uneven areas or holes that can develop in the hedges and fix the problems without error.
Some homeowners think it’s simple to just shear off the ovrgrown or bad parts of a hedge or cut out the dead wood when it comes to pruning and upkeep, but a professional hedge trimmer knows better, and has the knowledge needed to successfully maintain the various hedge material found on any property.
Marshalls have been in business since 1988, when company owner Andrew Marshall came out of the Royal Airforce and started trading, initially as a landscape gardener.
Trees were very much a part of the lanscaping job so the opportunity presented itself to expand the business in this area.
The relevant courses required were completed and business started to develop and the business started to move more in the direction of Tree Surgery.
In 1998, Marshalls Landscapes became Marshalls Tree Surgeons, becoming a Limited company in 2011.
Since then, the business has grown steadily, counting various large Corporate businesses and public bodies amongst the many customers since the business began.
The ethos at Marshalls has always been to carry out every job to the highest standards, from complicated dismantles to the most basic hedge cut.
That ethos and standard of work remains the same today.
Andrew takes a great pride in his work and the reputation of his Company, a reputation he has taken many years to painstakingly build. He prices his work realistically, which may not always be the cheapest, but is a fair reflection of the quality job that you will get. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
- Nick Pope
Andrew and his crew were recommended to me by a neighbour that has been using them for many years, and I'm very glad to have met him and to have used his services. He has one of those rare attitudes of 'doing what's right' for the customer as opposed to doing what will result in more work and a bigger fee for him.
His advice and knowledge has been invaluable in transforming our garden, which has included cutting down and reshaping a large number of trees and bushes, and his pleasant and cheerful attitude, together with his punctuality and excellent value for money have made him a pleasure to deal with.
I'd recommend Andrew and his company, without any hesitation, to anyone looking for any form of tree services.
- Sukh Ryatt
Andrew has done a number of jobs for me over the years. I have always found him to be extremely business like, competitively priced and makes a very good, clean tidy job. I would thoroughly recommend him

Marshall Tree Surgeons are still operating and are committed to caring for the health and well-being of our customers and playing a constructive role in supporting guidelines regarding Social Distancing
Our bank side clearance contract on the A696 and the old Woolsington road has almost been completed. There’s just some Hawthorn reductions to be done at the end of the runway.
We are all pretty tired and feel we have the balan
e of mountain goats after walking up and down steep banks cutting back overgrown planting and have hands like pin cushions after dealing with what was mostly Hawthorn!
Today has been a return to seasonal hedge cutting. Check out our galleries to see why we are in such demand!
Beginning of the week sees all hands on deck at the start of our A696 banks clearance contract for Newcastle Airport. Full lane closure to keep us all safe and steady progress has been made. Two weeks anticipated job time.
Darlington of all places for our induction course on traffic management for our upcoming A696 bank side clearance contract with Newcastle Airport
You live and learn. Yesterday, whilst dismantling a Willow tree we were aware of the presence of a lot of wasps. We thought maybe there was a nest nearby, but it was when we started ‘coining’ the large timber that we noticed a frenzy of ac ivity around the cut bits.
A google search revealed why. Apparently the sap and acid within the Willow are an aphrodisiac to wasps! So subdued were they, that we were able to work unmolested. Usually the vibration of a chainsaw aggravates wasps, increasing the likelihood of being stung, but these little critters had other things on their mind!
Darras Hall today for the dismantle of a dangerous Willow tree. We braced this tree after our innitial inspection as it had a major crack in the main stem from a large section of inclusion*. We had pointed this out to the customer sometime ago but the liked the tree so much they decided the risk was worth taking. However this new development meant the tree was totally unsafe.
* inclusion is where a limb lacks a branch bark collar and so doesn’t have a good attachment to the tree. It can be alleviated by reducing the weight in the limb or removing it all together if possible.
Despite the soaking we’ve received over the last few days and the River Pont at flood level in the Park its business as usual on this Monday morning. We are currently putting the finishing touches to one of our larger hedge cuts in D rras Hall, the evidence of which can be seen in our hedge cutting gallery!
Starting one of our biggest, if not they biggest hedge cuts we do. This one is in Darras Hall and it’s easily the size of a football pitch. This’ll take us into next week.
Newcastle Airport again today to carry out thinning works at thier new meet and greet parking facility.
Recieved a call at 7am this morning from the Chief Engineer at Newcastle Airport to day that a tree had come down and was blocking the carriageway, so it was all systems go to get on site ASAP. When we got there it was actually a very large limb from n Oak that had come down. A little while later the obstruction was all cleared and traffic could move freely again.
From there it was on to Gosforth and two dismantles. All in all a very productive day. All we need now is for the rain to clear!
Marshall’s have invested in a battery powered long reach hedge cutter. It has greater reach is more light weight has much longer battery life than previously but doesn’t have the power of standard two stroke machines. It certainly has its lace though especially on the higher hedges and of course it always starts first time! No more prolonged cold weather starts! This technology can only improve but for now most of our machines will stay petrol powered.
We are happy and proud to launch our new website.

The UK Government has been urged to ‘Think Global, Plant Local’ to start tackling the damaging effects of climate change.
Independent advisers have told the Government that planting trees and building with wood is a “simp
e, low-cost option” to remove large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere - a message also highlighted by Sir David Attenborough in his latest TV series.
However, the UK Government is still way behind its own modest targets of planting 11 million trees in England in the five years to 2022.
Now Confor has laid down a challenge by setting ambitious new targets for the four UK nations - a total of 40,000 hectares (about 100,000 acres) of new planting every year by 2030.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge for us all and politicians must raise their game - not set a low bar and then fail to get over it,” said Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor. “Tree planting rates in England and Wales are currently woeful but with political will, we can turn that around and ‘Think Global, Plant Local’ to help tackle the appalling impact of climate change.
“We are working closely with the UK Government to push up planting rates, but I hope they will listen to Sir David Attenborough and really focus on the opportunity. In the new series Our Planet, he says we need to protect and manage ancient forests, but also create large new productive forests to tackle climate change and supply the wood we need for our low-carbon future.”
